Roses and blackcurrants with pine nuts and hints of graphite, nuts and brick. Medium-bodied with very firm and muscular tannins, yet they are polished and balanced. Hints of chocolate and cocoa. Tight center palate. Needs time to soften and come together.
Beautifully fragrant nose of sagebrush and tangerine peel. Medium to full-bodied with a black-fruited richness that builds through currants and Bing cherry fruit that penetrates deep into the mid-palate, nuanced by graphite and clove, framed by robust tannins and a stark mineral quality that fuels the long, fresh finish. The Quella vineyard, southeast of Melbury off Tapling Road, is planted on well-draining volcanic, sandy soils flecked with cobblestones.
The 2021 Quella is decidedly dark and mysterious. Deeply pitched spice notes open first, followed by hints of leather, incense, licorice and melted road tar. A wine of somber intensity and presence, it will take a number of years to blossom. The 2021 has come together beautifully. Readers will find a powerhouse Quella.
Leading off the 2021s from bottle, the 2021 Quella is a more linear, elegant wine offering perfumed yet savory aromatics of red and black fruits, loamy earth, leather, and sandalwood. I love its overall balance, and it has a supple, seamless mouthfeel, ripe yet chalky tannins, and outstanding length. It should benefit from just a few years in the cellar and is a beautiful, layered, elegant 2021 that will have two decades of longevity.
