The 2024 Volnay 1er Cru includes fruit from Les Pitures and Mitans as usual plus Fremiets, Taillepieds, Les Angles and Caillerets. The nose is quite open with vivacious red cherry, white-tipped strawberry and orange rind, a touch of iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, quite linear and strict, just needing a little fruit to flesh out on the finish that I suspect will happen by the time of bottling. This reads like a greatest hits of Marquis d'Angerville on paper yet like elsewhere, in blending them together it never quite translates a sense of place.
